Honolulu Facts And Tips

Honolulu the State Capital and the most popular city in the Hawaiian Islands lays on the island of Oahu. Located in the Pacific Ocean, Honolulu has so much more to offer than just the famous Waikiki Beach. Full of attractions, beaches, stores, and markets where you can often bargain with the vendors to bring home that special memento for yourself and your loved ones.

There is so much one can do to save money in Honolulu and the island of Oahu . The first thing I always do when planning a vacation to Oahu is before I leave I purchase a Entertainment Book for Hawaii where you can save on everything from hotels, food and attractions. Full of money saving coupons such as 2 for 1 admissions it is a must book to have for anyone looking to save money while on the island.

Plan ahead what you want to see and do before you go, being organized can save time when on your trip so you have more time to relax and enjoy yourself.

Getting around by city bus is extremely easy and care free, and an excellent way to save money on your vacation in and around Honolulu. No other Hawaiian island enables you to move around so well on the Public Transit System than the island of Oahu. To save even more one can purchase transit passes for about $20.00 for 4 days or 40.00 for the whole month. Of course if one chooses you can rent a car or take a cab ride, tour buses, and of course scooter and motorbike rentals are available for rental in many places especially the Waikiki area. However it is good to note that scooters are not permissible to be ridden everywhere on the island.

There are many tour operators servicing Honolulu. If going with a tour company combine a few highlights together whenever possible to save you time and money. If on a limited budget and if one has the time you can often go to such highlights yourself for free or minimum cost by just using the Public Transit System or a rented vehicle.

There are many dining options available on Oahu. You may want to try some of the local food like Poi or Manapua. There are many major restaurants such as Denny’s, and The Old Spaghetti Factory always a favorite. For a smorg buffet try Perry’s Smorgy’s restaurant on Kuhio Ave. Also a favorite among both the locals and tourists. For fast food there are many McDonalds and Jack In The Box chains throughout the island as well as most other large fast food chains.

One can save money on food by getting accommodations with a fridge, microwave or kitchenette. When you are in Honolulu ask the locals where they like to eat, they often know great places that are inexpensive.

A good place to do your shopping in the Waikiki area is the famous International Market Place with over 130 shops and stands you are sure to find what you want. Don’t forget to haggle with the vendors, you can save a lot off the suggested price. Outside the Waikiki area be sure to check out the swap meet at the Aloha Stadium. It costs $1.00 per person entrance fee but is well worth the small cost. There are many vendors throughout the stadium. You can get great deals, again don’t forget to haggle. They are open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6 am-3 pm.

Where to stay in Honolulu depends on how important location is to you and your personal budget. Traveling during the off season, the months of November - March can save you money, except during the holidays when kids are out from mid December - mid January. Some people consider renting a time share or if going with a couple just renting one room with a separate bedroom and sharing, most hotels allow up to four adults in the room as long as there is a separate bedroom. Check for special room rates in the Entertainment Book for Hawaii if you purchased one.
